Lifestyle or Screening, which comes first for Colon Cancer detection?

Sunday, November 4th, 2007

There has been a lot of press recently about lifestyle factors that positively or negatively affect your chances of having colon cancer. However, without good screening and early treatment, altering your lifestyle may not help prolong your life. The reason for this is that colon cancer early symptoms, are notoriously difficult to diagnose, so without the disease being detected by screening, the cancer is often fairly advanced by the time an accurate diagnosis can be made.

One reason that the levels of screening for colon cancer are low (only half of those over 50 who are recommended to have screning do so) is the invasive nature of a colonoscopy.

Recent developments, however may mean that the colonoscopy could be replaced with an xray,or “virtual colonoscopy. Should the test become widely available, the take up of screening is expected to sharply increase.

5 Tips to Lose 5 Pounds in 5 Days

1. Substitute a diet shake or bar for breakfast and lunch and then have a low cal dinner. Here’s a recipe for a homemade diet shake if you’d prefer to make your own. ½ cup of apple, grape, or orange juice, one small banana, ½ cup crushed ice, one scoop protein powder. Blend until frothy and ice cold. You can add a few strawberries, peach slices, or pineapple rings to vary the flavor. The low cal dinner is a portion of lean meat, chicken or fish. A portion is between three to four ounces and is about the size of a deck of cards. You can have as many steamed veggies and salad with no fat dressing, as you’d like.

2. Exercise at least 15 minutes three times a day, once in the morning, once at lunch, and once late afternoon. The exercise doesn’t have to be strenuous, brisk walking, or going up and down stairs is fine. Besides burning up about 100 calories, exercise boosts your metabolism 10 – 15% for about three to four hours afterwards. If you exercise three times a day you’ve just increased the rate at which you burn calories for nearly the entire day.

3. Only eat raw food. Food in its natural state releases more nutrients. Most of us won’t eat raw chicken, fish, or meat so that means lots of calorie saved and fat. Combine fruits and vegetables for salads. If you’re worried about protein, you can add a handful of nuts to your diet. An alternative program is to have a small portion of cooked fish or chicken for lunch, and raw foods for the remainder of the day.

4. Eat five small meals a day instead of the standard three. Eating small, 200 – 250 calories, meals every few hours insures you’re never hungry so you won’t overindulge. It also stabilizes your blood sugar so it doesn’t spike. Level blood sugar means that your body won’t react by producing too much insulin and converting the blood sugar to fat. Have a little protein with each meal. Two ounces of chicken is about 100 calories, add a small salad with nonfat dressing and a piece of fruit and you’re just about at 250 calories.

1. Eat breakfast like a queen, lunch like a peasant, and dinner like a pauper. Your body needs energy during the day, so start off with a hearty breakfast. Of course use good judgment and stay away from fatty bacon and sausage. You have less of the day ahead of you so eat a lighter lunch. And finally why fill up on huge dinner when there is so little time left in the day to burn it off.

Follow one or more of these tips and you should lose five pounds fast.
